Bulgaria's original crunch-crunch saltstick, made since 1976 by Mlin-97 JSC. Hrus-Hrus delivers thin, airy baked wheat sticks with no artificial flavors, no GMOs, and no hydrogenated fats, lightly salted and imported from Bulgaria. 60g single-serve bag, 60 per case.

The name says it all. Hrus-Hrus — Bulgarian for crunch-crunch — is the sound this stick makes the moment it meets your teeth. Since 1976, Mlin-97 JSC has been making it, and four decades later it remains the original and the best-selling pretzel stick in Bulgaria.

About Hrus-Hrus

Mlin-97 JSC was the first company to produce pretzel sticks commercially in Bulgaria, launching the Hrus-Hrus brand in 1976. Today it is the country’s leading baking industry manufacturer, and the Hrus-Hrus Classic remains its signature product — certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 45001:2018, and FSSC 22000 food safety standards. The name itself, taken from the Bulgarian onomatopoeia for the crunch of a well-baked stick, became so embedded in everyday speech that many Bulgarians use “hrus-hrus” to describe any crunchy snack.

The Classic recipe is deliberately minimal: wheat flour, water, palm oil, iodized salt, compressed bread yeast, sunflower lecithin as an emulsifier, and a raising agent. No artificial flavors, no GMOs, no hydrogenated fats. The result is a thin, glossy, evenly baked stick with a light salt crystal finish — airy without being fragile, salty without being sharp.

How to Enjoy It

Open a bag and eat straight — the 60g portion is perfectly sized for one sitting. Pair with a wedge of Bulgarian sirene cheese and a glass of Kamenitza beer for the classic Bulgarian meze moment. Pack into a lunchbox for school or work, tuck into a bag for the commute, or set out a few bags at a party table as an effortless salty snack. Hrus-Hrus is the kind of snack that disappears from the bowl before anyone notices it arrived.

What Makes It Special

Most snack brands borrow their names from places or traditions. Hrus-Hrus borrowed its name from the moment itself — the exact sound a perfectly baked stick makes. Almost fifty years later, the recipe has not changed because it did not need to. No artificial flavors, no GMOs, no hydrogenated fats: just a clean, honest crunch that has satisfied Bulgarian households across four generations and is now available in the USA through Malincho.

Bulgarian Serving Tip

In Bulgaria, a bowl of hrus-hrus on the coffee table is as automatic as putting on a kettle. For a proper meze, open two or three bags into a bowl, set out a block of sirene cheese, a few Kalamata olives, and pour cold Rakia or a Kamenitza beer. The crunch of the sticks against the brine of the cheese is one of those combinations that just works, every time.

Pairs perfectly with: Bulgarian Sirene Cheese (Cheese department), Lutenitsa Classic (SKU: LHDER), Tandem Beef Sujuk (SKU: TM33).

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Hrus-Hrus mean?

Hrus-Hrus (pronounced roughly as “hroos-hroos”) is Bulgarian onomatopoeia for the crunching sound food makes when bitten into — the equivalent of “crunch-crunch” in English. Mlin-97 chose the name in 1976 to describe exactly what the experience of eating the product would be like, and the name stuck so firmly that it is now synonymous with saltsticks across Bulgaria.

Who makes Hrus-Hrus?

Hrus-Hrus is produced by Mlin-97 JSC, a 100% private Bulgarian company and the first commercial producer of pretzel sticks in Bulgaria (since 1976). Mlin-97 is today one of the leading manufacturers in the Bulgarian baking industry and holds international food safety certifications including ISO 9001:2015 and FSSC 22000.

Are these the same as Zlatna Dobruja saltsticks?

No. Hrus-Hrus and Zlatna Dobruja are two distinct Bulgarian brands made by different manufacturers. Zlatna Dobruja is made by Savimex Ltd. and is known for a slightly denser, more traditional stick. Hrus-Hrus, made by Mlin-97 JSC since 1976, is known for its glossy surface, airy baked texture, and longer heritage as the original Bulgarian pretzel stick brand. Both are available at Malincho (see also SKU: CR39 and CR391).

Do these contain artificial flavors, GMOs, or hydrogenated fats?

No to all three. Hrus-Hrus Classic is made without artificial flavors, without GMOs, and without hydrogenated fats. The ingredient list is: wheat flour, water, palm oil, iodized salt, compressed bread yeast, sunflower lecithin (emulsifier), and raising agent.

Is the 60g bag single-serve?

Yes. The 60g format is designed as a single-serve portion — ideal for lunchboxes, travel, desk snacking, and events. Hrus-Hrus is also available in larger formats (150g and 250g) depending on the range carried at Malincho. Cases of 60 single-serve bags are available for bulk buyers.

Is this product imported from Bulgaria?

Yes. Hrus-Hrus saltsticks are manufactured by Mlin-97 JSC in Bulgaria and imported directly to the USA by Malincho. The manufacturer has been operating in Bulgaria continuously since 1976.
